Popular among fishermen, hikers, campers, birdwatchers and nature-enthusiasts alike, McDowell Nature Center and Preserve offers an array of outdoor activities on its 1108 acres of protected forest and rolling terrain. Preserving the habitats of over 175 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, including the Seminole Bat and Pileated Woodpecker, as well as rare and endangered plants, the site provides wonderful opportunities for ecological education to visitors of all ages. An informative nature center sits at the entrance of the preserve, offering nature exhibits, bird-feeding stations and a butterfly garden as well. Located 17 miles southwest of downtown Charlotte, the preserve features a picnic area, camping, a playground, and numerous hiking tails, as well as boat ramps and paddleboat rentals for enjoyment on Lake Wylie.
Nature Center open Mon. - Sat. 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Sun. 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.; Nature Preserve open daily 7:00 a.m. – sunset.
Nature Preserve, $5 per vehicle (Mar 1 - Oct 3 on weekends and holidays); Nature Center is free.
